  • those ten minutes

    P1050669a
Each night I knit a few rows before I turn in.  That's all I can do.  It took three nights to finish the collar.  Instead, it's been bows, and  arrangements, seasonal priorities.  As of last night, the knitting part of the Rhinebeck sweater is finally done.

What's left?  Steaming  and checking everything before weaving in the few ends,  then sewing on the buttons.

This morning's truck was scheduled for 7.  By quarter of, we were dressed, coffee'd and had pretty well warmed up enough to be off loading the boxes of plants.  I sat down at my wheel to spin and watch for it to arrive.  Ten minutes.  The coopworth has been blended with a bit of colored merino.  Must have been the influence of all the red ribbon.  I felt like I wanted a tweed.

    1. those 10 minutes here and there do add up. I was just talking to my daughter about “10 minutes” last night. We were discussing how when she was a baby I only had 10 minutes to get something done before she would fuss and cry. Amazing how much really did happen in those little blocks of time!

    2. I’ve been fitting in about 10 minutes each morning. It adds up quickly!

    3. 10 minutes a day really does add up. I like that yarn you’re making.

    4. Are you left handed? I’m excited to see Rhinebeck sweater!

    5. Manise

Nice left-hand forward singles! Can’t wait to see the unveiling of your sweater and the requisite modeled shots!

    6. I am so smiling. Beautiful yarn, left hand and all. I just got home, and do you think there is any knitting left in me?? There’s barely a blogpost. I’m running out of braindead blogposts.

    7. 10 minutes well spent…good for keeping your balance during hectic times.
left hand forward- such advantages esp. on the Charka or the Great!

    8. Is that fiber as soft as it looks? And it looks gorgeous spun up, too.
It’s truly amazing what you can do, just 10 minutes at a time.

Things I've been thinking about.. this week.

Around 5 am I woke up and found myself thinking about that missing blog post thought.  Turns out it had to do with the cold and how cold I was feeling that dark morning and eventually it led to wishing that I had worn an undershirt.  I love that they keep my lower back warm.  If my back is cold, I'm cold.  When I was a child we called them undershirts.  Later, as an adult, shopping for some for my grandmother, I found they were called 'ladies vests'.  Now, if I want one, I have to ask for a 'camisole', or 'cami'.  Some of the cotton ones are called 'wife beaters'.   Maybe it depends on where you live.  Probably, it has more to do with when.  Today is a good day for an undershirt.

This morning, when I looked at the clock to know that it was 5 am, I had to subtract 20 minutes to get the time.  C has this habit of setting the alarm, which is the one that lights up making it visible in the dark, 20 minutes later than the real time.  It makes me crazy.  If you know that it is 20 minutes off, what good is it.  He thinks it buys him more time.  I've set up my own little clock on my side of the bed with the real time. It doesn't light up in the dark.   Now that I think of it, I don't even think about subtracting 20 minutes.. even in my sleep.

Again this morning, the news is all about the recession.  That is not news.  It is old news.  In my stack of mail that arrived yesterday, were 5 applications for credit cards.  FIVE!  Four of them were for a VISA card, all different banks.  No wonder they're in trouble.  That is not responsible lending.  What are we thinking giving them money??  Wait 'til the credit shit hits the fan… that'll be news!

The last of these little gems has to do with shoes.  For the last 12 weeks, that would be since I broke my foot and C. had his broken, shoes have been an issue.  I can finally fit into a number of mine.  He still can only wear sandals and his heavy winter pack boots.  Consequently, he is always mixing up pairs to be more comfortable.  This is what I picked up this morning.  No wonder he can't find a pair.

When I sat down to post, it was going to be all about my 10 minutes a day.  I've got pictures.. later.

    1. I’ve grown very fond of undershirts/camisoles or whatever they are. Amazing how much warmer one can be with that extra layer.

    2. Manise

Until my cast comes off, I wear a racer back undershirt to bed and hug my heated Bucky pillow to stay warm. I can’t wait to be able to crawl into bed with long sleeved jammies again! During the day I wear my short-sleeved shirts with a polartec vest and handknit scarves or my new Malabrigo cowl.

    3. I had to wonder about the “news” that the stocks took another dip when word came out that we were Officially In A Recession. Because it was a surprise? Gimme a break, people.
I usually only see cotton t-shirts called wife beaters when they’re worn by a man (usually the ribbed ones, so they’re tight) with no shirt over top. I think the name refers as much to the whole package as it does to the shirt itself.

    4. Sometimes I think this recession is more of a new thing than a real thing. Where I am there are still restaurants full of people which makes me think that things aren’t so bad. Then again, I had a budget meeting yesterday and things look really bleak for my budget next year.

    5. Undershirts. Great idea!

    6. If you start wearing an undershirt, you should not stop wearing an undershirt, until next spring. (or so I was told by my grandmother who swore I would get sick if I didn’t keep wearing my undershirt…those little cotton ones with the hard pink flower smack dab in the middle)
PS…you are going to want to keep wearing one for the next week…burrrrrr

    7. I’m getting those credit things too. Black Friday simply meant that people couldn’t change their habits, and there will be more mortgage and credit bailouts for people who are acting like dinosaurs (keep doing what you are doing when what you are doing isn’t working anymore).
I’m with Chris. I’m about 8 minutes ahead. It’s a mindgame, and it works for me.

  • did you see the moon

      and other chatter..

While driving into town Tuesday morning I planned the post I'd do for today.  It sounded good as I talked out loud to myself.  What did I know.  My brain was fuzzy and the beginning of a migraine was forming in the middle of my forehead.  Driving in the dark, it all sounded pretty clever.  Now, as I sit down to write it up, I haven't a clue as to what I was thinking.  I can't even remember the subject.

What I do remember is the moon Monday evening as I drove home.  Hope you caught it.  On the news later, I heard it described as a smile or a frown, depending on where you viewed it.  I saw it hanging low in the sky, a bright crescent.  In my sky, below and to the side were the two planets, Venus and Jupiter, a cosmic frown against an orange and blue twilight.  I reached for my camera. No luck.  It had been left behind in my tool bag, riding home in another truck.  You can check out pictures and info on National Geographic's site.  Better yet, there is a slide here, with pictures from around the globe, planets and moon changing orientation with the viewing location.

I saw it on Sandy’s blog on Monday. I couldn’t see here it as it was obscured by my tall pines. Great links.

    2. I’ve been watching Jupiter get “closer” to Venus since October. We saw a planetarium presentation in Tulsa, OK, which was geared to this season. For the first time in my life I’ve known what I was seeing in the sky. What joy!

    3. I confess that my stargazer friend called me to remind me to look up.
It was quite a sight, once the clouds cleared out.

    4. I write my best posts while driving and they never make it out of the car. I saw the moon, but the planets were obscured by the haze.

    5. Argh. I forgot all about it. My son would have loved it!

    6. I saw the moon and went in the house to get my tripod and camera. By the time I got back out there the sky had completely clouded over and the moon was no longer visible. I was really disappointed but I’m glad I at least saw it even if I didn’t get photos.

    7. When I saw those spots of light not moving, I wondered what planets they were. Thank you!

    8. Yep, I made sure to look for it when I left work that day. Very cool! 🙂
I hope you got over your migraine…

    9. Oh yea we saw it! Very cool!

    10. We saw it as we were leaving my son’s house – he lives close enough to DIA – and there were planes in contention (plane? planet?) but once we got away from Denver, it was apparent.
Gorgeous. Of course we had a camera but the batteries were dead from baby photos!!
