Smatterings

  • spinning

Last month, at the Vermont Sheep and Wool Fesstival, I came home with a bag of Romedale roving from Steeple Chase Farm.  It is a beautiful reddish brown and very soft.  Gretchen has a knack for knowing which of her fibers I'll be particularly smitten with and sent it over to me.  I spindle spun a sample at the show and decided to spin it into a worsed wt. 3 ply yarn.

For once, I have only one spinning project and one that is easy to stick to.

The November woods has pared down.  We're nearing the season of bare bones and clear light.

This morning I was shown a wood I hadn't walked before.  It was criss crossed with beautiful old stone walls.  An overgrown cemetery was just visible.  If it hadn't been pointed out to me, I could easily have walked through it.  The last burial was in 1896.  The headstone was still polished, the only one legible.  Most of the stones had fallen, some were never more than standing stone markers.  The property owner had refused to have the old burial ground listed, so it remains untended.  I wonder how many of these are scattered about, once tended, loved, now forgotten.

    1. Its almost time to switch to black & white photos. But not quite yet.

What a fun walk! I guess listing the burial ground would mean having to tend to it’s upkeep and allowing people on the property to visit it? I call this season of the falling leaves Stain Glass season. The bare trees provide the framing/ veins of colorful sunrises and sunsets.

    3. Certainly a time of monochrome coming.

I saw the Ten on Tuesday subject long after I had written my post.  It looked like fun and I do read a lot of series.  I checked out all of the ToT links and thanks to all, have a new reading list .  I tend to get stuck on an author if I've enjoyed a book, often reading everything they've written, one after the other.  That sort of makes it a series. Hope you enjoy exploring some of my favorites.

So here's my list, 10 Favorite Books in Series, in no particular order, a couple days late.

Makepeace Headly Series,  Diana Norman.  I read these after reading another series by the same author under the name Ariana Franklin

Mistress of the Art of Death, Ariana Franklin  ..historical fiction, loved every book

Mary Russell,  Laurie King   ..a Sherlock Holmes spinoff..what if he married.

    Outlander, Diana Gabaldon

Pillars of the Earth,  Ken Follet  ..I've read most of his books, these were particulary descriptive.

Dirk Pitt series, Clive Cussler   .. outrageous adventure.  Just for fun.

Slains series, Susanna Kearsly    .. after reading so many in the Outlander series, I found these to be very interesting.  Starts with The Winter Sea.

Stones for Ibarra, Harriet Doerr    .. Consider this Senora..not really a series but they meshed perfectly.

The Fountainhead,  Ayn Rand  with Atlas Shrugged

Chronicles of Narnia,  CS Lewis   Wonderful.  Read during my search of creation myths.

Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, The Hardy Boys, Sherlock Holmes

    and on and on.
